Artist Statement:
S.A. Lawrence-Welch is a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta and is a displaced nêhiýaw person due to the genocide that was the Canadian residential school system and forced assimilation efforts by the government and church. Their art is a reclamation to their First Nations origins and is done in honour of their family members who had to hide their identities due to survival. Using upcycled and vintage items, S.A. creates traditional imagery with modern concepts. The use of the name of "Uncle Deadly" is a nod to their upbringing in Treaty 6 territory, hunting with their father and listening to 90's country.
